WELCOME TO OUR FALL E-NEWS!
What a beautiful fall boating season! Having such pleasant cruising weather and fair winds lasting so long into the season escapes most recent memories. I hope you and your family were fortunate to take advantage of the weather aboard your boat and visiting all that New England and our islands have to offer.
Speaking of cruising, it is with great pleasure that I announce our summer Flotilla program; a cooperative effort between Points East Magazine and Cape Yachts. Beginning this summer we'll provide two wonderful cruising opportunities. Each flotilla will offer you an opportunity to cruise while under the watchful eye of experienced lead captains that have visited the ports before. Our first flotilla will cruise a loop of southern New England while the second flotilla will begin in southern New England and travel up the coast visiting ports along the way ending in Maine. Please read more about these cruising events in this issue of our eNews.

Our builders continue to debut wonderful new boats for you and your family to enjoy in 2009. Beneteau introduces three new sailboats including the new Beneteau 54, 34 and First 45 in addition to a new power yacht, the Swift Trawler 52. Hallberg-Rassy introduces the exciting new HR 372 and Robalo presents the much anticipated 247 Dual Console; a true saltwater family boat. I hope you are as excited to see these new boats as we are to offer them to you.
As the on the water season wraps up in New England our winter rendezvous season is just beginning to warm up! While discussing our Flotillas over lunch recently with Joe Burke and Bernie Wideman of Points East we began to wonder how well received the Points East Workshop Series would be in Southern New England. A few phone calls and conversations with our customers later and we are off and running! Under separate cover we will be announcing a schedule of workshops to be hosted at our facilities at South Wharf Yacht Yard in Padanaram. Stay tuned!
As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of our eNews. Please don't hesitate to let us know how we can make these issues more informative and enjoyable for you. From all of our team at Cape Yachts, Eastland Yachts and South Wharf Yacht Yard we want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to earn your relationship.
We wish you and your family a wonderful winter season and we look forward to seeing you at the winter boat shows!
Kindest regards,

CAPE YACHTS FLOTILLAS
If you've ever wanted to try a longer voyage but didn't want to go it alone, consider a Cape Yachts flotilla! Bring along your family and friends, make new friends, visit port of calls you've always wanted to, all while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow boaters.
The CY Flotilla program is headed by former Points East Owner/Publisher, Bernie Wideman. Bernie developed the flotilla concept at Points East because they felt there is a population of boaters who are competent and who would like to see sights outside their usual cruising range but would feel a lot more comfortable going with boats that had been there before and who would like to leave the organizing of shoreside details to others. These original flotillas began with downeast trips to Fundy. Now, through the combined efforts of Points East Magazine and Cape Yachts we are bringing New England flotillas to you starting with the summer of 2009.

THE NEW ROBALO 247 INVITINGLY INNOVATIVE by Bill Tierney, Cape Cod office
More than a year in the making, Robalo's sensational new R247 is in a class by itself. Simply stated, there isn't a 24-foot sport or fishing boat that compares when it comes to seaworthy performance, clever extras and interior flexibility. The R247 is an awesome boat for our New England Waters.
The New Robalo 247 sports a wraparound windshield that sets a bold styling tone coupled with the beautiful lines Robalo is known for. The fiberglass construction with Kevlar reinforcement and premier stainless steel hardware are all a cut above the competition. A high energy options list is accented with three multi-purpose seating options, an electric grill, wet bar, custom tackle center, livewell, special electronics and an assortment of custom tops and towers.
We defy you to find a super sized dual console with comparable storage. Carry-ons stow under all the hinged bow seats which are insulated with overboard drains for fish storage. In the cockpit, the hinged in-floor ski locker has a built-in drain, is wide enough for wakeboards and also has secure rod storage. The helm console provides protection for the stereo, tackle storage and space for large accessories.
Come and see this boat at one of our locations in New England soon. Our first hulls will be built in Deep Water Blue, Robalo's new color for 2009 and displayed at the Providence and Boston Boat shows.

NEW BROKERAGE OPPORTUNITIES

THE FLAGSHIP SERIES - THE NEW BENETEAU 54 AND CNB BORDEAUX 60 by Eric Krusell, CPYB, South Wharf office
We are proud to be partnered with some of the finest builders in the industry. And from one of our fine builders, Beneteau, we debut the new Beneteau 54, flagship of the Beneteau fleet, and the CNB Bordeaux 60.
The Beneteau 54 continues with everything that has made the new generation of Beneteau so successful. This is a magnificent yacht with flowing lines designed by Berret-Racoupeau. Thanks to its generous deck gear and a wisely designed running rigging plan, the flagship of the range remains a boat that is extremely easy to handle and, in particular, can be sailed shorthanded. Also of note is the capstan type windlass, the arrangement of which is inspired by the Super Yachts. On deck, the sea is accessed by a wide, very comfortable stern skirt.

SUMMER SAILING MEMORIES by Eric Krusell, CPYB, South Wharf office
As the winter months approach and an interesting 2008 comes to a close, I am pleasantly reminded of the vacation I took with my family in Maine and the many daysails we had over the weekends of last summer on Cape Cod. With these pleasant thoughts in mind, I did a quick search into the files of my computer and found the digital shots we took of the kids throughout our summer.
The first photo I came across was of my two year old son Ian's first power boat trip tubing behind us on his mom's lap, yelling "Faster!" The photo reminded me of waking up the next morning to Ian pulling on my arm, dressed only in a diaper with a life jacket half on saying, "Let's go out to my green boat, Daddy."
Then I saw a picture of my eight year old daughter, Carina, perched at the bow of our sailboat, gazing out, hair blowing, having the time of her life. An experience every child would be lucky to have and remember. I know we feel fortunate to give her this opportunity.
I then remembered as I enjoyed the site of Carina at the bow, I looked back at my wife wondering if she was enjoying the kids as much as I was, only to find her stretched out in the cockpit, with a hat covering the sun in her eyes, relaxing for the first time all summer. What a well deserved moment.

A BAD DAY ON THE WATER IS BETTER THAN ANY GOOD DAY IN THE OFFICE! by Patrick Lane, CPYB, Cape Cod office
So, the stock market is a mess and your 401k value on your recent statement is half of what it used to be. Woe is me, woe is me. This is going to be bad. Real bad. OK! Maybe! But, put this little item in your hat: There are some really good buys in the market right now. As soon as the smart ones figure out that there are millions to be made by buying low and selling high the chances for making out big time will be gone and you will be one of the ones saying to him or herself that "I should have bought when the price was so low". That's the woulda, coulda, shoulda disease that all of us, at one time or another, have had.

VACUUM INFUSION A BETTER WAY TO BUILD A BOAT by Mark Edwards, South Wharf office
Thirty five years ago and fresh out of high school I took a job in the mold room at Pearson Yachts. The supervisor set me to molding Pearson 26 hulls and other Pearson parts with the one other guy in the mold room who could speak a little English. Tyvek suits, respirators, and the requirement for safety glasses were all years away. Molding then was a dirty business. I would find my uniform pants still standing vertically in my locker as I left them the day before.
Many mold rooms are unchanged to this day spraying resin and chopped strand and rolling out the air. For those that practice forms of vacuum infusion however, boat quality and the environment have improved. Alerion Express sail boats and True North power boats built by renowned RI builder Pearson Composites are laminated in a process of vacuum infusion called SCRIMP.
What is SCRIMP? SCRIMP stands for Seeman Composite Resin Infusion Molding Process and is a patented system utilized at Pearson Composites for many years. In SCRIMP, all the fiberglass and core materials are placed in the mold following a strict "recipe", a screen matrix is covered by a plastic vacuum bag, a vacuum is drawn and checked for leaks, and catalyzed resin is drawn through or infused through this laminate by the vacuum.

WANT TO SAVE MONEY BOATING NEXT SUMMER? INVEST IN PROPER OUTBOARD MAINTENANCE by Bill Tierney, Cape Cod office
Regular maintenance is critical for the continued proper and reliable operation of any high-tech outboard motor. Your outboard(s) lives in one of the harshest environments imaginable. High load, high RPM operation, extreme temperatures, high moisture, salt water, and even periods of non-use all combine to take their toll. Preventive care is critical to assuring an uninterrupted season on the water next summer and most undoubtedly will save you from more expensive repairs.
Following a simple maintenance program will add value and longevity to your outboards while assuring reliability. It's always easier and less expensive to maintain than to repair. Following the maintenance procedures, as described in your owner's manual, on a regular scheduled basis helps ensure proper operation while maintaining the value of your investment. Not sure what your scheduled maintenance should be? Simply call one of our experienced Customer Reps at SWYY (508) 990-1011 and we'll do the research for you.
In addition to protecting your investment, preventive maintenance assures that your boat is ready to go when you are. Many of us have experienced sitting on the dock with family and friends, fish gear and coolers in tow only to find your engines won't start. Or worse yet, stranded out on the water. Regular maintenance helps assure that your boat's ready at a moment's notice and not sitting in the dealer's service bay on July 4th!

ALERION EXPRESS 33 WINS AGAIN by Richard Barker, South Wharf office

|
We tested the Alerion Express on the race course again this year and garnered three wins in four races. The most satisfying had to be the first race of the Vineyard Cup where we not only won the race but handily beat two Morris 36's, a Friendship 40, and Friendship 53 as well as a Hinckley DS 42. We were in fact first to the first mark boat for boat. As we did last year we sailed the boat with two people. The next day we finished third getting beat by another Alerion Express 33 sailed by Mal Winkley of Mystic, CT. Winds that day reached 33 knots and both Alerions continued to excel.
A couple of weeks later we sailed with the editor of Sail Magazine in the Buzzards Bay Regatta out of the Beverly Yacht Club in Beverly, MA. We won both of the races that we participated in crossing the line in one race overlapped with a new J120 with carbon sails.
Once again the Alerion Express line was not specifically designed as race boats but the performance of this beautiful yacht seems to lend itself to jumping into a race now and then and winning. For those of us who have raced with large crews in big hard to handle yachts and want to continue competing without all the logistics, the Alerion Express line fits the bill.

NEW FOR 2009 - THE HALLBERG-RASSY 372 The Ultimate Sailboat - Now at a Discount by Gene Magnetti, Eastland Yachts, Mamaroneck office
Strong Dollar Brings Price Cut on New Hallberg-Rassy Yachts
Hallberg-Rassy Yachts - built in Sweden - are highly regarded worldwide as exceptionally high quality blue-water boats made to go anywhere in the world at any time. And at this time, buyers can use their high value US dollars to buy one. As of October 24, 2008, each US Dollar is now worth 7.93 Swedish Krona. That is 22.7% more than it was worth at the beginning of the year. A positive year-to-date change means the dollar has strengthened against the Krona so far this year and will purchase more of this currency.
Effectively, this means anyone who buys now gets a discount of 22.7%. Of course the exchange rate fluctuates. Still, in world markets the US Dollar is considered a safe haven of value in times of economic tumult. There is, however, no sure way of timing your purchase at precisely the best possible time. But many people who appreciate the high-value and world market for Hallberg-Rassy Yachts believe that any discount is good, that 10% is very significant and anything approaching 20% could be a once in a lifetime buying opportunity.
You probably saw the recent NY Times article: "In Tough Times, Some Splurges Are Still Allowed." It made the case that "most of us work not merely for subsistence, but so we can spend money on things and experiences that bring us some form of contentment". And it answered the question of whether spending money on a boat was actually wise. The article affirmed that some splurges are allowed and even encouraged when you realize that for a lot of people a boat is an investment in something much more valuable than money. A boat is a chance to share time together with family and friends. It is an investment in our relationships and an opportunity to create rich memories with each other.
What the article did not mention is that in the midst of the worldwide economic situation, the US Dollar has strengthened against many world currencies and this means Americans can actually make that splurge for the ultimate boat at a very substantial discount.
