WELCOME TO OUR FALL E-NEWS!

Dave Nolan
What a beautiful fall boating season! Having such pleasant cruising weather and fair winds lasting so long into the season escapes most recent memories. I hope you and your family were fortunate to take advantage of the weather aboard your boat and visiting all that New England and our islands have to offer.

Speaking of cruising, it is with great pleasure that I announce our summer Flotilla program; a cooperative effort between Points East Magazine and Cape Yachts. Beginning this summer we'll provide two wonderful cruising opportunities. Each flotilla will offer you an opportunity to cruise while under the watchful eye of experienced lead captains that have visited the ports before. Our first flotilla will cruise a loop of southern New England while the second flotilla will begin in southern New England and travel up the coast visiting ports along the way ending in Maine. Please read more about these cruising events in this issue of our eNews.

Our builders continue to debut wonderful new boats for you and your family to enjoy in 2009. Beneteau introduces three new sailboats including the new Beneteau 54, 34 and First 45 in addition to a new power yacht, the Swift Trawler 52. Hallberg-Rassy introduces the exciting new HR 372 and Robalo presents the much anticipated 247 Dual Console; a true saltwater family boat. I hope you are as excited to see these new boats as we are to offer them to you.

As the on the water season wraps up in New England our winter rendezvous season is just beginning to warm up! While discussing our Flotillas over lunch recently with Joe Burke and Bernie Wideman of Points East we began to wonder how well received the Points East Workshop Series would be in Southern New England. A few phone calls and conversations with our customers later and we are off and running! Under separate cover we will be announcing a schedule of workshops to be hosted at our facilities at South Wharf Yacht Yard in Padanaram. Stay tuned!

As always, I hope you enjoy this issue of our eNews. Please don't hesitate to let us know how we can make these issues more informative and enjoyable for you. From all of our team at Cape Yachts, Eastland Yachts and South Wharf Yacht Yard we want to thank you for giving us the opportunity to earn your relationship. We wish you and your family a wonderful winter season and we look forward to seeing you at the winter boat shows!

Kindest regards,

CAPE YACHTS FLOTILLAS

If you've ever wanted to try a longer voyage but didn't want to go it alone, consider a Cape Yachts flotilla! Bring along your family and friends, make new friends, visit port of calls you've always wanted to, all while enjoying the camaraderie of fellow boaters.

Flotilla
The CY Flotilla program is headed by former Points East Owner/Publisher, Bernie Wideman. Bernie developed the flotilla concept at Points East because they felt there is a population of boaters who are competent and who would like to see sights outside their usual cruising range but would feel a lot more comfortable going with boats that had been there before and who would like to leave the organizing of shoreside details to others. These original flotillas began with downeast trips to Fundy. Now, through the combined efforts of Points East Magazine and Cape Yachts we are bringing New England flotillas to you starting with the summer of 2009.

Flotilla
The flotillas are led by experienced boaters. Flotilla participants are invited to participate in pre-flotilla organizational meetings and educational seminars on various nautical issues that might come up during the trip. Flotilla participants receive discounts at harbors and marinas while on the voyage. We also plan shoreside activities that include tours of historical sites, dinners and presentations by local experts.

We look forward to cruising with you this summer!

THE NEW ROBALO 247
INVITINGLY INNOVATIVE

by Bill Tierney, Cape Cod office

More than a year in the making, Robalo's sensational new R247 is in a class by itself. Simply stated, there isn't a 24-foot sport or fishing boat that compares when it comes to seaworthy performance, clever extras and interior flexibility. The R247 is an awesome boat for our New England Waters.

The New Robalo 247 sports a wraparound windshield that sets a bold styling tone coupled with the beautiful lines Robalo is known for. The fiberglass construction with Kevlar reinforcement and premier stainless steel hardware are all a cut above the competition. A high energy options list is accented with three multi-purpose seating options, an electric grill, wet bar, custom tackle center, livewell, special electronics and an assortment of custom tops and towers.

Robalo R247

We defy you to find a super sized dual console with comparable storage. Carry-ons stow under all the hinged bow seats which are insulated with overboard drains for fish storage. In the cockpit, the hinged in-floor ski locker has a built-in drain, is wide enough for wakeboards and also has secure rod storage. The helm console provides protection for the stereo, tackle storage and space for large accessories.

Come and see this boat at one of our locations in New England soon. Our first hulls will be built in Deep Water Blue, Robalo's new color for 2009 and displayed at the Providence and Boston Boat shows.

THE FLAGSHIP SERIES - THE NEW BENETEAU 54 AND CNB BORDEAUX 60
by Eric Krusell, CPYB, South Wharf office

We are proud to be partnered with some of the finest builders in the industry. And from one of our fine builders, Beneteau, we debut the new Beneteau 54, flagship of the Beneteau fleet, and the CNB Bordeaux 60.

The Beneteau 54 continues with everything that has made the new generation of Beneteau so successful. This is a magnificent yacht with flowing lines designed by Berret-Racoupeau.
Beneteau 54
Beneteau 54
Thanks to its generous deck gear and a wisely designed running rigging plan, the flagship of the range remains a boat that is extremely easy to handle and, in particular, can be sailed shorthanded. Also of note is the capstan type windlass, the arrangement of which is inspired by the Super Yachts. On deck, the sea is accessed by a wide, very comfortable stern skirt.

The Super Yacht expertise of Nauta Design is very clear in the interior space and accommodation of the Beneteau 54. The hull ports together with the long coachroof windows bring in plenty of natural light and give a view over the sea that will delight every sailor and their guests. The Beneteau 54 is abundant in living spaces (saloon, cockpit) and is available in an Owner's layout version (3 cabins + optional forepeak cabin).

Bordeaux 60
Bordeaux 60
Group Beneteau's "large yacht facility" CNB has announced the Bordeaux 60. To date, six yachts have been sold and construction is well under way. Each of these fine vessels is custom to each of their respective owners.

For yachtsmen looking to move up from their current 45ft to 50+ft boat, the Bordeaux 60 offers significant increase in speed, comfort, and more personalization. Her contemporary and elegant look, ease of handling (noting that most people want to sail with only two people), original layout, quality of construction, and good value is all that has become to be expected from CNB/Group Beneteau.

Please visit us online today to see photos and particulars on both yachts at cape-yachts.com.

Eric Krusell
Eric and Carina SUMMER SAILING MEMORIES
by Eric Krusell, CPYB, South Wharf office

As the winter months approach and an interesting 2008 comes to a close, I am pleasantly reminded of the vacation I took with my family in Maine and the many daysails we had over the weekends of last summer on Cape Cod. With these pleasant thoughts in mind, I did a quick search into the files of my computer and found the digital shots we took of the kids throughout our summer.

The first photo I came across was of my two year old son Ian's first power boat trip tubing behind us on his mom's lap, yelling "Faster!" The photo reminded me of waking up the next morning to Ian pulling on my arm, dressed only in a diaper with a life jacket half on saying, "Let's go out to my green boat, Daddy."

Then I saw a picture of my eight year old daughter, Carina, perched at the bow of our sailboat, gazing out, hair blowing, having the time of her life. An experience every child would be lucky to have and remember. I know we feel fortunate to give her this opportunity.

The Krusell Kids
        Carina, Ian and Paul Krusell
I then remembered as I enjoyed the site of Carina at the bow, I looked back at my wife wondering if she was enjoying the kids as much as I was, only to find her stretched out in the cockpit, with a hat covering the sun in her eyes, relaxing for the first time all summer. What a well deserved moment.

My son Paul fought the sailboat scene initially. It meant being away from the PSP, Game Boy, friends, etc. So he sat down below in the salon for a bit to ponder his new surroundings. Kind of like all of us I guess, it takes a few minutes or so to wind down and put yourself into the moment; a more relaxed state of mind. It did not take long before Paul came up, started asking questions, showing all of us what he remembered from the summer before and soon he was driving the boat, and trimming the sails. It was good to see a pre-teen smile sneak out and onto his face as I watched him think things out for himself and start to take charge.

Sunsets on the water are priceless. The time we spend with our families is priceless. Each time we row away from our boat in the dusk ending another great day on the water with our family together we create and enforce yet another favorite memory for each of us. Our family is fortunate to have many of these memories of the summer of 2008 and I eagerly look forward, along with my family, towards the new memories we will create this summer in 2009. When asked by friends why I love selling boats and yachts so much I am quick to be reminded that it is a pleasure and an honor to know that I have been and will be a small part of bringing memories such as these to many families in New England. I hope you and your family are as fortunate to spend time on the water together and create your own fond memories.

Don Brophy
BENETEAU 34
by Don Brophy, Manchester office

Cape Yachts is pleased to introduce the latest member of Beneteau's new generation sailing yacht to New England. Designed by Finot-Conq the Beneteau 34 is the perfect boat for the sailing couple or smaller family. Seaworthy and elegant, the 34 features a well balanced hull with stretched stylish lines for a high level of performance on the water.

Intended for all crew types, she has cockpit and deck ergonomics that allow for easy handling and movement about with optimal safety.

Beneteau 34

The cockpit also includes Beneteau's patented companionway system, with its foldable, sliding hatch first seen on the 37 and 31.

Just like the other members of the Beneteau family, the interior showcases a design penned by Nauta Design. Whether you are just starting in sailing or being welcomed back the Beneteau 34 gives more than its due to shared moments: a galley designed for preparing great food with spacious bright and comfortable salon in with to enjoy.

Happy Sailing!

A BAD DAY ON THE WATER IS BETTER THAN ANY GOOD DAY IN THE OFFICE!
by Patrick Lane, CPYB, Cape Cod office

So, the stock market is a mess and your 401k value on your recent statement is half of what it used to be. Woe is me, woe is me. This is going to be bad. Real bad. OK! Maybe! But, put this little item in your hat: There are some really good buys in the market right now. As soon as the smart ones figure out that there are millions to be made by buying low and selling high the chances for making out big time will be gone and you will be one of the ones saying to him or herself that "I should have bought when the price was so low". That's the woulda, coulda, shoulda disease that all of us, at one time or another, have had.

I recently sold a boat to a family that started to panic when closing time arrived. The fact was they took the money from a retirement account for the down payment and financed the rest (at only 6.5% mind you). The balance of their retirement account took a hit. The money they put down was still there in the form of a boat. The money they put down is a sound investment in their future sailing enjoyment; in their family. This money is now safely invested in something that gives back. Recreation, vacation, relaxation, stress reduction, sport, family and more. When it came time for John to close on his boat he told me, "I am thankful we have the money in something we can enjoy."

Wow! Now that is a revelation that got me to thinking. Why don't we (I am including myself now) look at a boat purchase as an investment in the family rather than a discretionary and luxurious outlay of hard earned cash? Is it really conspicuous consumption or a life investment? We all get bogged down in the bad news that has permeated the media lately. We forget that we only go around once. We forget that our family is the most important thing we have in life, and that we don't have to be stressed out all the time. We need (and I use the word "need" instead of "want") outlets for life enjoyment. "A bad day on the water is better than any good day in the office." "I'd rather be sailing." "Gone fishin." Sayings that really do say it all. We all "need" outlets, why not take advantage of the down market and all the special prices and financing deals being offered today? Remember, don't come down with woulda coulda shoulda disease!

Mark Edwards
VACUUM INFUSION
A BETTER WAY TO BUILD A BOAT

by Mark Edwards, South Wharf office

Thirty five years ago and fresh out of high school I took a job in the mold room at Pearson Yachts. The supervisor set me to molding Pearson 26 hulls and other Pearson parts with the one other guy in the mold room who could speak a little English. Tyvek suits, respirators, and the requirement for safety glasses were all years away. Molding then was a dirty business. I would find my uniform pants still standing vertically in my locker as I left them the day before.

Many mold rooms are unchanged to this day spraying resin and chopped strand and rolling out the air. For those that practice forms of vacuum infusion however, boat quality and the environment have improved. Alerion Express sail boats and True North power boats built by renowned RI builder Pearson Composites are laminated in a process of vacuum infusion called SCRIMP.

What is SCRIMP? SCRIMP stands for Seeman Composite Resin Infusion Molding Process and is a patented system utilized at Pearson Composites for many years. In SCRIMP, all the fiberglass and core materials are placed in the mold following a strict "recipe", a screen matrix is covered by a plastic vacuum bag, a vacuum is drawn and checked for leaks, and catalyzed resin is drawn through or infused through this laminate by the vacuum.

Why is vacuum infusion important? There are many advantages of using this system. Key among these is better quality and consistency of molded parts. Vacuum infusion eliminates the potential for error so evident in hand lay-up molding where too much glass or too much resin might be applied. Because all of the glass fabrics and core materials are laid in the hull while still dry following a specific recipe, each part will be formed exactly the same way. This consistency is very important for control of weight and to insure that each boat is meeting its designed structural requirements. Too much or too little resin in a laminate is not strong and vacuum insures the optimum ratio of resin and fiberglass. A stronger, lighter, denser, void free laminate is the result and with total resin penetration through the core material, water migration is no longer possible.

In addition to better and more consistent quality in the molded parts, the SCRIMP molding process is cleaner and better for the environment. Resin is no longer sprayed so excess airborne resin fumes and styrene VOC's (volatile organic compounds) are reduced significantly. Excess resin is drawn off in overfill tubes as are the styrene emissions so typical in hand lay-up operations. This capture of resin results in substantially reduced use of acetone and cleaning solvents further reducing the amount of VOC's to the atmosphere and creating a safer work place for the mold room worker.

I continue to work in fiberglass to this day on small boat projects that remind me of my days at Pearson. If you are considering a new boat purchase soon, SCRIMP vacuum infusion is a great way to go!

WANT TO SAVE MONEY BOATING NEXT SUMMER?
INVEST IN PROPER OUTBOARD MAINTENANCE

by Bill Tierney, Cape Cod office

Regular maintenance is critical for the continued proper and reliable operation of any high-tech outboard motor. Your outboard(s) lives in one of the harshest environments imaginable. High load, high RPM operation, extreme temperatures, high moisture, salt water, and even periods of non-use all combine to take their toll. Preventive care is critical to assuring an uninterrupted season on the water next summer and most undoubtedly will save you from more expensive repairs.

Following a simple maintenance program will add value and longevity to your outboards while assuring reliability. It's always easier and less expensive to maintain than to repair. Following the maintenance procedures, as described in your owner's manual, on a regular scheduled basis helps ensure proper operation while maintaining the value of your investment. Not sure what your scheduled maintenance should be? Simply call one of our experienced Customer Reps at SWYY (508) 990-1011 and we'll do the research for you.

Many of our customers are unaware of the extent of our outboard service shop assuming that all of our business is offshore inboard powered vessels. Cape Yachts & South Wharf Yacht Yard is your authorized Yamaha Dealer and, better yet, our Yamaha CSI scores are 100% satisfaction! We stand ready and eager to help you get the most out of your outboards.

As your authorized Yamaha Marine Dealer we can assist you with proper maintenance of your Yamaha outboard using Genuine Yamaha Maintenance and Care products, implement a regular maintenance program for your boat and install genuine parts and accessories. We the have the staff, tools, facilities, and training to do the job right. And remember, while we do exclusively sell Yamaha Outboards, we are certified in the servicing of most other outboard products as well. Call one of our Customer Reps today to discuss how we can be of service to you and your boat.

Richard Barker
ALERION EXPRESS 33 WINS AGAIN
by Richard Barker, South Wharf office

Alerion Express 33

We tested the Alerion Express on the race course again this year and garnered three wins in four races. The most satisfying had to be the first race of the Vineyard Cup where we not only won the race but handily beat two Morris 36's, a Friendship 40, and Friendship 53 as well as a Hinckley DS 42. We were in fact first to the first mark boat for boat. As we did last year we sailed the boat with two people. The next day we finished third getting beat by another Alerion Express 33 sailed by Mal Winkley of Mystic, CT. Winds that day reached 33 knots and both Alerions continued to excel.

A couple of weeks later we sailed with the editor of Sail Magazine in the Buzzards Bay Regatta out of the Beverly Yacht Club in Beverly, MA. We won both of the races that we participated in crossing the line in one race overlapped with a new J120 with carbon sails.

Once again the Alerion Express line was not specifically designed as race boats but the performance of this beautiful yacht seems to lend itself to jumping into a race now and then and winning. For those of us who have raced with large crews in big hard to handle yachts and want to continue competing without all the logistics, the Alerion Express line fits the bill.

Alerion Express 33
Katie Barker is at the helm of the Alerion Express 33 during the Jamestown Around the Island Race.
While the Alerion Express 33 and 38 weren't specifically designed for racing the Alerion Express 28 has proven to be a very race worthy boat for both One Design and PHRF racing. One Design fleets are popping up on both the East and West Coast. Many of the reasons that the 28 is taking off as a race boat is the same ease of handling, the flexibility of sail configurations and the no hiking small crew that is prevalent in the AE 33 and 38.

What could be better than sailing a beautiful classic looking yacht that can be easily singlehanded by just jumping aboard when the spirit moves you that can also show her transom to the rest of the fleet at your local club evening race. We have the entire line of Alerion Express Yachts here at our South Wharf facility. Give us a call, we'd love to show them to you.

Hallberg-Rassy 372
NEW FOR 2009 - THE HALLBERG-RASSY 372
The Ultimate Sailboat - Now at a Discount
by Gene Magnetti, Eastland Yachts, Mamaroneck office

Strong Dollar Brings Price Cut on New Hallberg-Rassy Yachts

Hallberg-Rassy Yachts - built in Sweden - are highly regarded worldwide as exceptionally high quality blue-water boats made to go anywhere in the world at any time. And at this time, buyers can use their high value US dollars to buy one. As of October 24, 2008, each US Dollar is now worth 7.93 Swedish Krona. That is 22.7% more than it was worth at the beginning of the year. A positive year-to-date change means the dollar has strengthened against the Krona so far this year and will purchase more of this currency.

Effectively, this means anyone who buys now gets a discount of 22.7%. Of course the exchange rate fluctuates. Still, in world markets the US Dollar is considered a safe haven of value in times of economic tumult. There is, however, no sure way of timing your purchase at precisely the best possible time. But many people who appreciate the high-value and world market for Hallberg-Rassy Yachts believe that any discount is good, that 10% is very significant and anything approaching 20% could be a once in a lifetime buying opportunity.

You probably saw the recent NY Times article: "In Tough Times, Some Splurges Are Still Allowed." It made the case that "most of us work not merely for subsistence, but so we can spend money on things and experiences that bring us some form of contentment". And it answered the question of whether spending money on a boat was actually wise. The article affirmed that some splurges are allowed and even encouraged when you realize that for a lot of people a boat is an investment in something much more valuable than money. A boat is a chance to share time together with family and friends. It is an investment in our relationships and an opportunity to create rich memories with each other.

What the article did not mention is that in the midst of the worldwide economic situation, the US Dollar has strengthened against many world currencies and this means Americans can actually make that splurge for the ultimate boat at a very substantial discount.

Hallberg-Rassy 372
HR 372 Aft Cockpit with Protective Windshield
The Hallberg-Rassy Concept

Built to go around Long Island, Block Island, Newport, the Cape, Maine, or around the World, Hallberg-Rassy has always meant ocean-going yachts that are a joy to sail in great comfort and safety. They are strongly built to be easily manageable under both sail and power, providing their owners with ultimate confidence in every detail.

I visited the factory in Sweden this past year and can attest that this family owned company is almost obsessive in their pursuit of the highest quality in building the ultimate sailing vessel for their customers. Unlike other manufacturers, each Hallberg-Rassy is fully launched and commissioned at the factory before it is shipped. This ensures that everything fits and operates to factory specification before delivery and it eliminates typical bottlenecks that otherwise would have to be dealt with by the local dealer.

The new Hallberg-Rassy yachts are designed by Germán Frers to be very lively sailing boats suitable for any wind and sea conditions a sailor is likely to encounter. Frers' speed prediction diagram indicates that the new Hallberg-Rassy 372 will even be faster than the HR 40, which is recognized as a fast yacht. The resale value of a Hallberg-Rassy is exceptionally high and owners are reassured to know they will be able to sell their yacht at a reasonable price.

Hallberg-Rassy 372
HR 372 Impeccable Workmanship in Luxurious Cabin Layout
The new Hallberg-Rassy 372 broadens the HR concept to attract US buyers who prefer an aft cockpit layout. The new HR 372 is designed to take all of the exceptional Hallberg-Rassy attributes and bring them to sailors who want a choice between center and aft designs. The boat is now in production and will be displayed at the major Boat Shows in Europe beginning in Hamburg on October 25, 2008 and ending in Denmark in March 2009.

The first HR 372 production slot is now available to US buyers for March 26, 2009 delivery. Potential owners can call to review available standard and customization options and get full details on pricing and delivery.

The combination of the strong dollar providing a discount and the availability of the new lively sailing HR 372 with an aft cockpit just may be the ticket to deciding that now is the time to buy your ultimate sailing vessel. Call us today to discuss your interest in Hallberg-Rassy.
