To develop a fast, fun, facile competitor was the challenge that Farr Yacht Design and Beneteau shared in the development of this new racer/one design. With a sleek, open, no compromise cockpit, powerful sail plan, asymmetrical spinnaker and a blade/bulb combo keel, that goal has been reached on the new First 10R.
Beneteau called on Bruce Farr to give the First 10R a really revolutionary hull - both stable and powerful, with a large bowsprit forward allowing big spinnakers to be carried to advantage when reaching. A real winner's profile.

CONSTRUCTION
HULL: The First 10R hull
and its structural grid are infused in one operation for a better
strength/weight ratio, and overall reduction in weight and optimal weight
control. The bilges are constructed in single skin fibreglass/synthetic resin,
the skin in glass fibre/balsa/synthetic resin sandwich.
The gelcoat is white with anthracite First
decoration (2 bands of gray above the waterline and a band of grey at the sheer
line.
DECK: Fiberglass /
The deck is constructed by a closed molding injection system (glass fibre,
balsa, synthetic resin sandwich) for better strength/weight ratio, a better
finish and optimal insulation.
All areas of working and manoeuvring on deck are
treated with a 'Picot' non-skid finish.
Solid reinforced areas are constructed at points
under the deck fittings (winches, tracks, chain plates, cleats).
DESIGN Designed in
accordance with European RCD requirements and CE Certification, these
regulations ensure that the First 10R incorporates important features such
as: • Safety and protection of persons on board • Durability of
materials • Stability and safety • Safety when manoeuvring • Fire
protection • Protection of the environment and reduction of engine emissions

HULL/DECK JOINT The
hull/deck joint is secured in three ways: • The deck is mechanically attached
to the hull by screws fixing the teak toerail. • The deck is also bonded to
the hull (polyurethane adhesive) to guarantee better quality. • A finishing
joint guarantees watertightness of the bonding.
KEEL The keel
comprises a cast iron fin with torpedo shaped lead bulb on bottom hardened with
antimony to lower the center of gravity.
To increase their life the keels are given an
anticorrosion treatment and improved finish before assembly, using epoxy based
coatings and paint. The keel is fitted to the hull with high-resistance bonding
as well as a system of bolts and stainless steel backing plates.
